The Event Data Project on Conflict and Security (EDACS)

EDACS collects and analyzes event data in order to explain the temporal and spatial escalation patterns of organized violence, i.e. the evolution and demise of armed conflict and security in the zones of turmoil of failing and failed states.

In a first phase, EDACS concentrates on the coding of violent events in several countries in sub-Saharan Africa from 1990 until today.

The EDACS data of Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo for the period 1990-2007 is complete; the coding for Sierra Leone, Liberia, Rwanda, and Burundi is currently in process.

The basic unit of observation in the EDACS dataset is a single event which is defined as a violent incidence with at least one casualty resulting from the direct use of armed force. The dataset contains, amongst others, information on dates, geographic location (latitude and longitude), actors, number of fatalities (civilian / military) and types of military action. For a detailed description of these and other coded variables see the coding manual (PDF).
