In recent years, governance has evolved into a key concept in political science. The term is used to refer to processes and structures of regulation and rule that are either not at all, or at least not primarily and exclusively, based on hierarchically organized government action, but instead involve nonhierarchical modes of action by private, semiprivate, and public actors.
