Mechthild Leutner – 2010

Dividing the career of Richard Wilhelm, a prominent German sinologist, into three periods, this article discusses his collaborative work with Chinese scholars in studying Chinese culture and science. The author argues that Wilhelm's relationship with his Chinese colleagues changed over three periods, along with his understanding of Chinese cultural tradition. This change, from "hierarchical to egalitarian concepts of cooperation," reflected and corresponded to the fluctuating forces on both the domestic and international levels.
