International Symposium on Cross-Sector Social Interactions (CSSI 2016), Toronto, Canada, 18.-20.4.2016

Lili Mundle presented a paper on behalf of the D1 Team at the fifth biennial International Symposium on Cross-Sector Social Interactions (CSSI 2016). Here researchers and practitioners from various fields came together to discuss how partnerships between government, business, civil society and academia can address global challenges. In particular, this year’s theme addressed how partnerships can achieve transformative change. Through various workshops and paper sessions, the participants were able to discuss, for example, what governance structures community-based partnerships needed to succeed, what role power or time plays in partnering activities, or how non-state standards can best relate to government regulation. Examples of partnerships were to be found in the fishery, health and forestry sectors as well as around issues such as homelessness, resource conflict and sanitation in urban slums. The D1-project’s paper addressed the issue of transformative change through an in-depth study on how actors in a standard-setting partnership (the Alliance for Water Stewardship) assessed the relevance of private meta-governance (by the ISEAL alliance) for the partnership's impact.
