Lotje de Vries (1979) is a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg and Assistant Professor at the Centre for International Conflict - Analysis and Management (CICAM) at the Radboud University in the Netherlands. Her research focuses on borders, state-building and the authority of state and non-state actors in South Sudan and the Central African Republic. Her latest research project is part of the Collaborative Research Programme (SFB700) ‘Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood’ and will look into public and alternative security provision in the peripheries of South Sudan and the Central African Republic. Lotje de Vries has a background in development sociology and a PhD degree from Wageningen University (2012). She is a member of the editorial board of Politique Africaine and co-edited a book on the borderlands of South Sudan (Palgrave Macmillan 2013). Prior to joining CICAM and GIGA Lotje de Vries worked on her PhD research and other projects at the African Studies Centre in Leiden (2008-2013), in Senegal with the development organisation Enda Diapol (2005-2007) and as a consultant for various organisations like the OECD, VNG-International and the French Ministry of Defence.
