Economic Governance
Working Paper 11
Christoph Trebesch , - 2008
This paper discusses the concept of Economic Governance. It summarises the growing body of economic literature on governance and institutions to make it more accessible for related debates in Germany, particularly in the field of Political Science. I categorise forms of private Economic Governance and provide many examples from the existing body of research. I also discuss how the market mechanism has been exploited as a public policy tool. The article shows that private agents substitute lacking public order and institutions with private modes of Governance. Especially in developing countries, economic actors have learned to create their own organisational environment needed for their transactions, e.g. private mechanisms to enforce property rights or contracts. Yet, many types of private ordering in markets can also be found in more developed economies.
